Start with the program’s requirements
Pennsylvania’s Community HealthChoices program provides certain benefits to eligible participants. Some approved arrangements may allow an eligible family member or friend to provide paid assistance. Participation does not by itself mean a particular caregiver or agency can be paid.
Confirm the family relationship and role
Do not assume a spouse, legal guardian, power of attorney or representative payee qualifies as a paid caregiver. Restrictions depend on the applicable program and role; the plan or program must confirm whether the proposed arrangement is permitted. Other family members must also meet the relevant requirements.
Confirm hours, employment and payment
Ask the plan and proposed employer about eligibility, authorization, approved hours, screening, training, the employment process and the actual pay rate. Payment is not guaranteed for care already provided. Do not expect payment until the applicable approvals and employment arrangements are confirmed.
